At the Bio-based Future Connect event, the ToBeReal was recognised as a prime example of successful cross-border collaboration and interregional support for start-ups and SMEs operating within the bio-based sector. The project demonstrated how coordinated regional efforts can strengthen innovation ecosystems and facilitate knowledge transfer.
This contribution was shared during a panel discussion alongside Piotr Jurga (Innovation Broker at the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation, Poland) and Tomasz Calikowski (European Commission, DG RTD), bringing together both practical experience and policy perspectives.
From this standpoint, key questions were raised regarding the role of SMEs in cross-border projects – whether their engagement is primarily driven by funding opportunities, technological cooperation, or broader strategic ambitions. The discussion also explored how academia and industry can better align to advance sustainable innovation, particularly in light of strong sustainability priorities within European policy frameworks.
Further reflections addressed how to ensure that projects generate meaningful sustainability benefits alongside economic value, and whether the ongoing paradigm shift – decoupling economic growth from negative environmental externalities – continues to resonate with stakeholders.
